She's danced her way to Internet stardom, with millions of viewers falling in love with her gentle demeanor and signature irresistible wiggle dance. But behind that bubbly exterior lies a story full of sorrow and unimaginable trauma. Ditta's life has never been easy, but her resilience is so awe-inspiring.

For dogs like Ditta, adoption can be difficult. The numbers don't lie: puppies who are seven months old or younger are the most likely to get adopted, followed by classic breeds such as Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds. On the opposite end of the spectrum, senior dogs are routinely overlooked in shelters and are often the first to be euthanized, a heartbreaking reality highlighted by the ASPCA. Other "undesirable" pets include dogs with physical disabilities (such as amputees), females (56% of dogs that get adopted are male), and black dogs, who take four times as long to get adopted compared to their lighter-coated counterparts.
Given her history, it's clear that Ditta also struggles with canine PTSD, a severe condition affecting an estimated 5% to 17% of dogs, according to Dr. Lori Teller, an associate professor at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. Much like humans, when dogs experience something traumatic (war, abuse, displacement, etc.), it's not as if those memories just disappear. To protect themselves, many dogs hide their trauma, masking their pain until they get triggered, which can make rescue adoption even more challenging.

According to Dr. Teller, “because dogs can experience psychological conditions like humans, the symptoms of PTSD in dogs are similar to those in people and include chronic anxiety, hypervigilance, avoidance of specific places, people, or situations, sleep disturbances, fear of being alone, reduced interest in favorite activities, and aggression.” Yet, Ditta's story is living proof that all dogs—regardless of age, breed, color, or past—deserve love too. These often-overlooked animals have so much to offer—we just need to give them to opportunity to show us. Senior success stories like Ditta's prove that age is nothing but a number—and that puppies aren't the only dogs who deserve loving homes.
But the journey was difficult. Her fears were immense, and Ditta was scared of everything. Sidewalks, pavements, tiny patches of grass, even men: they were all triggers and, in her eyes, dangerous. Potentially life-threatening. Even a simple walk through the park could become a warzone. "Unfortunately, [her] nervous system can’t tell the difference between having to walk on wet grass and being held at gunpoint,” reads the text overlayed on a video of hers.

However, life changed forever when one incredible human stepped up and offered to care for Ditta. The stint was only supposed to last two weeks, but when no one offered to adopt the Ukrainian rescue, the decision became simple: her foster parent wanted to adopt her. They knew in their hearts that this relationship was never going to be temporary: they were destined for eternity.

Then came the doorway issue. Everything else was going great and, seemingly, beginning to fall into place. “I think she’s starting to trust me,” writes Ditta’s owner on a particularly touching TikTok detailing their journey of becoming a chosen family. Ditta began to blossom: overcoming her apprehension of strangers, walking on the sidewalk, and touching grass without fear. But there was one hang-up that still haunted her: doors and hallways.

In a now-viral video, Ditta is seen standing in various places throughout the house, either in doorways or halls. Each time, she's frozen in fear and is visibly distressed. She hovers at the foot of a doorway and whimpers when prompted to leave through the screen door. “We couldn’t figure out why she was so terrified of doors,” reads the caption. “We struggled to go to new places with her because she would refuse to enter if she saw a door.”
A heartwarming solution
Just when all hope was lost, they decided to try one final Hail Mary. If they couldn’t help Ditta get over her door phobia, maybe someone else could. Someone who spoke her language, in a way. It was time to bring in the reinforcements. To her surprise, Ditta’s owners welcomed a new dog into the family, a Golden Retriever named Bobbi, who they had rescued from the streets of Macedonia. The connection was instantaneous. Like peanut butter and jelly, the two went together perfectly, and Bobbi’s relaxed, cheerful energy seemed to be exactly what Ditta needed to succeed. And the plan worked! With Bobbi by her side, Ditta’s confidence grew and grew. He led her through doors using a stick or some sort of toy to pull her through the entryway. Every step of the way, he patiently waited for his sister and stayed by her side until Ditta finally conquered her fears. At the end of the video, the two are prancing around together, and Ditta is racing through doorways as if she’d been doing it her whole life.

“Instead of returning her to the shelter, you got her a friend and saved another pup 🥺 Thank you 😭😭” wrote one of the many commenters on the video. Another exclaims, “The friend said, ‘Look, you’re safe here’ 🥺😭 MY HEART 😭😭” Then finally, “Sometimes we can’t be brave for ourselves but can be brave for someone else. ❤️”
