When Olivia Walsh posed with her boyfriend Gavin Hulberg at the Georgia Aquarium’s beluga whale exhibit, she had no idea she was about to be part of one of the internet’s most heartwarming viral moments.

Gavin, with the help of the aquarium staff, planned the perfect surprise proposal in front of the beluga tank. What neither he nor Olivia could have expected was the reaction of Qinu, a 16-year-old beluga whale who appeared equally stunned.

As Gavin got down on one knee, Qinu floated into view, her jaw dropping in what seemed like disbelief. Her perfectly timed reaction was captured on video, which Olivia later shared on TikTok with the caption, “The most perfect proposal I could've asked for.” The video has since garnered over 7 million views and countless comments.

“Even the beluga was shocked!”

The video has sparked a wave of joy and humor across social media, with viewers projecting their own playful thoughts onto Qinu’s reaction.

  • “The beluga NEEDS to officiate the wedding now,” joked u/isa.
  • Play-Doh’s official account commented, “Beluga has to be invited to the wedding.”
  • u/Bob summed it up best: “Even the beluga was shocked 😭.”

Other users chimed in with their interpretations of Qinu’s reaction:

  • “The beluga was like: 'OH MY GAWWDDD,'” wrote u/Els.
  • u/Citali hilariously added, “The beluga: .O.”

@withlovebyliv I’ve been interning with the beluga training team for the last 3 months so this was the most thoughtful way he could’ve done it 🥺 #georgiaaquarium #belugawhale #proposal ♬ original sound - withloveliv

A natural reaction

According to People, where the story was first reported, Qinu’s reaction was entirely unplanned. Katie Lorenz, associate curator of mammals and birds at the Georgia Aquarium, confirmed that “Qinu’s behavior at the window was her own—she was not intentionally trained to have any type of ‘reaction.’”

For Olivia, who has been a beluga whale training intern for three months, the proposal couldn’t have been more special. In a TikTok reply, she shared, “My fiancé is the most thoughtful person!! He knows how much I’ve loved working with the whales & truly made it the most special moment.”

Internet takes a deep dive

The video has inspired conversations not only about the proposal but also about the ethics of keeping animals in captivity. On Instagram, some commenters voiced concerns:

  • “So wrong to keep a magnificent animal like that in a tank… shame!!!” wrote @alinasaballos.
  • @naturaleclectic added, “Nothing cute or adorable about these sentient creatures being kept confined in glass houses for human amusement.”

Still, many viewers found joy in the moment:

A viral star is born

Qinu’s viral fame has also reignited interest in the Georgia Aquarium. For those who want to visit Qinu or catch a glimpse of her playful personality, the aquarium offers a live beluga whale webcam and behind-the-scenes moments on their TikTok and Instagram accounts.

As for Olivia and Gavin, this proposal is one they’ll remember forever—and they might even have a certain beluga whale as a special guest at their wedding.

Sea otters have come to the rescue on the coast of one California town.

Hungry California  sea otters wiping out species of crab and scientists couldn't be happier

It is an established scientific fact that otters are adorable. They hold hands with fellow otters as they drift atop the water and use rocks to playfully crack open clams. Hermione's patronus is a sea otter! They're also voracious eaters, consuming about a quarter of their body weight daily. That last bit led them to become ecological superheroes in one California coastal town.

At Elkhorn Slough in California, a thriving population of southern sea otters has taken on an unlikely role: invasive species exterminators. According to USA Today, the otters’ voracious appetite for European green crabs, one of the West Coast’s most destructive invasive species, has nearly wiped the crabs out in the estuary. This has helped revive a delicate ecosystem that had been struggling for decades.

European green crabs, originally from Europe as you might have guessed, arrived on the West Coast in the 1980s and quickly became a menace. Though small—just four inches across—they wreak havoc on coastal ecosystems by devouring seagrass, baby crabs, and salmon while competing with native species. They’ve also caused significant damage to multimillion-dollar shellfish industries for Dungeness and king crabs.

Man builds special place for hikers to process grief during holiday season

The holiday season can be one of the most difficult times to deal with grief. Memories and traditions of the past may no longer be as the loss of a loved one and its permanence is felt. So Mark Beaulieu (@sparkybeaulieu), a paramedic for 40 years, decided to build a Wind Phone on a popular hiking trail in his area to help those struggling with grief this holiday season. In a video shared by his daughter, Sydney Beaulieu (@sydneybeaulieu), she captured her dad clearing snow from a bench in front of the phone–located in North Bay, Ontario at Canadore College on the Sugar Shack hiking trail. "My dad built this in our favorite hiking spot & it's perfect for those who are grieving this holiday season," she wrote in the video.

There is a rotary wall phone located inside a wood stand, with a touching plaque explaining the purpose of the Wind Phone. "A Wind Phone is for anyone who has lost someone special in their life," it reads. "We hope you find comfort in expressing feelings, sharing memories and saying the goodbyes you never had the opportunity to say."

Grandma raised during Great Depression finally gets Christmas gift longed for as a child

Little ones at Christmas write their gift wish lists with hope and anticipation. But for the grandma of TikToker Lola (@elle.nic), there was one thing on her list each year that never made it under the tree: a doll. It was a gift she never received due to her family's struggles during The Great Depression–something she had shared with them. And her granddaughter, Lola, was listening. To make this Christmas one of the most meaningful for her grandma, Lola knew exactly what to get her.

The video begins with the camera focused on Lola's grandma, who is decked out in her holiday best with a bow in her hair and festive sweater. "My 90 year old Grandma always told stories of how she never got a doll when she was a little girl," the video explains. "She grew up during The [Great] Depression on a farm and her family couldn't afford much." Her grandma is sitting in a chair opening up a present when she realizes what it is: the doll she has always longed for.

The German Reichstag building.

"To the German People" reads the inscription on the German Reichstag building.

Germany's political parties make historic pledge against misinformation before election

In a rare moment of unity, Germany’s political leaders are showing the world that even in times of disagreement, politics can be better. Ahead of the country’s national elections, now scheduled for February 23 (originally set for September), the country’s main political parties have signed an agreement to keep things fair and respectful on the campaign trail.

The agreement, as reported by Yahoo News, brings together Chancellor Olaf Scholz's Social Democrats (SPD), the opposition Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU), the Greens, Free Democrats (FDP), and The Left. Together, they’ve pledged to avoid personal insults, misinformation, and underhanded tactics in what could otherwise be a tense election season.
