When Olivia Walsh posed with her boyfriend Gavin Hulberg at the Georgia Aquarium’s beluga whale exhibit, she had no idea she was about to be part of one of the internet’s most heartwarming viral moments.

Gavin, with the help of the aquarium staff, planned the perfect surprise proposal in front of the beluga tank. What neither he nor Olivia could have expected was the reaction of Qinu, a 16-year-old beluga whale who appeared equally stunned.

As Gavin got down on one knee, Qinu floated into view, her jaw dropping in what seemed like disbelief. Her perfectly timed reaction was captured on video, which Olivia later shared on TikTok with the caption, “The most perfect proposal I could've asked for.” The video has since garnered over 7 million views and countless comments.

“Even the beluga was shocked!”

The video has sparked a wave of joy and humor across social media, with viewers projecting their own playful thoughts onto Qinu’s reaction.

  • “The beluga NEEDS to officiate the wedding now,” joked u/isa.
  • Play-Doh’s official account commented, “Beluga has to be invited to the wedding.”
  • u/Bob summed it up best: “Even the beluga was shocked 😭.”

Other users chimed in with their interpretations of Qinu’s reaction:

  • “The beluga was like: 'OH MY GAWWDDD,'” wrote u/Els.
  • u/Citali hilariously added, “The beluga: .O.”

A natural reaction

According to People, where the story was first reported, Qinu’s reaction was entirely unplanned. Katie Lorenz, associate curator of mammals and birds at the Georgia Aquarium, confirmed that “Qinu’s behavior at the window was her own—she was not intentionally trained to have any type of ‘reaction.’”

For Olivia, who has been a beluga whale training intern for three months, the proposal couldn’t have been more special. In a TikTok reply, she shared, “My fiancé is the most thoughtful person!! He knows how much I’ve loved working with the whales & truly made it the most special moment.”

Internet takes a deep dive

The video has inspired conversations not only about the proposal but also about the ethics of keeping animals in captivity. On Instagram, some commenters voiced concerns:

  • “So wrong to keep a magnificent animal like that in a tank… shame!!!” wrote @alinasaballos.
  • @naturaleclectic added, “Nothing cute or adorable about these sentient creatures being kept confined in glass houses for human amusement.”

Still, many viewers found joy in the moment:

A viral star is born

Qinu’s viral fame has also reignited interest in the Georgia Aquarium. For those who want to visit Qinu or catch a glimpse of her playful personality, the aquarium offers a live beluga whale webcam and behind-the-scenes moments on their TikTok and Instagram accounts.

As for Olivia and Gavin, this proposal is one they’ll remember forever—and they might even have a certain beluga whale as a special guest at their wedding.

Scientists extracted a Pink Floyd song from brainwaves and it’s haunting

The concept of reading thoughts once belonged to the realm of science fiction, but breakthroughs in neural decoding are turning it into reality. This technology, which interprets brain activity into meaningful signals, has already allowed scientists to reconstruct words and images from brainwaves. Now, researchers at the University of California, Berkeley have taken it a step further. In August 2023, they managed to recreate a Pink Floyd song purely from brain activity, a discovery published in PLOS Biology that offers new insight into how the brain processes music.

A team led by Robert Knight and Ludovic Bellier conducted the study on 29 epilepsy patients at Albany Medical Center in New York who were undergoing brain surgery. While the patients were in the operating room, they listened to "Another Brick in the Wall, Part 1" by Pink Floyd. Electrodes placed directly on their brains recorded the electrical signals produced as they processed the song. Using artificial intelligence, Bellier later reconstructed the track based entirely on these neural recordings. The final result was hauntingly distorted yet unmistakably recognizable. "It sounds a bit like they’re speaking underwater, but it’s our first shot at this," Knight told The Guardian.

She noticed something odd in a news photo—25 years after her brother vanished

When someone close suddenly disappears, their family clings fiercely to hope—even if the search stretches across decades. A woman who had spent years desperately searching for her younger brother, Tommy, discovered an astonishing lead after 25 years of uncertainty. Ahead of Thanksgiving, a seemingly ordinary detail in an online news story changed their lives forever.

For decades, the sister had carried deep sadness about Tommy’s disappearance in 1999. According to CNN, Tommy had vanished along with his vehicle without leaving any trace. Over the years, she anxiously scoured reports of unidentified remains, fearing the worst. However, her fortunes changed dramatically after coming across an article in USA Today, which featured a hospitalized man whose identity was unknown, as he could neither speak nor communicate effectively.

These 21 products gaslight you into thinking they’re essential. They’re not.

Some things in life are actually necessary—clean water, decent healthcare, basic human decency. But then there are the things that feel like they’re gaslighting us. The things we’re told we can’t live without, even though we survived just fine before they existed. Things like "smart" fridges, lawn fertilizer services, and yes—whole body deodorant.

Recently, we asked our Facebook audience: What's a product or service that feels like it's gaslighting all of us into thinking it's necessary? More than 8,000 responses poured in. The answers were passionate, funny, and surprisingly unified.

A Tim Hortons and a biker.

Representative Image: Luc Perreault's experience outside a Tim Hortons has opened a lot of eyes.

A mom told her daughter not to talk to the ‘dirty biker.’ His epic response is pure class.

We've all heard the saying, "Don't judge a book by its cover," but in reality, snap judgments happen every day. Whether it's based on someone's clothes, tattoos, or demeanor, these assumptions can often be unfair—and completely wrong. One Canadian biker experienced this firsthand when a mother at a Tim Hortons dismissed him as a "dirty biker" in front of her child. Instead of reacting with anger, he shared a powerful message on Facebook that resonated with thousands.

Luc Perreault, a burly, tattooed biker, had stopped at Tim Hortons for a coffee when he exchanged a friendly smile with a little girl. But rather than receiving kindness in return, he overheard the child's mother pulling her away and saying, "No, no, dear, we don’t talk to dirty bikers."
